Christmas Skiing holidays 2009

11 07 2009

Come celebrate Christmas this year with a ski holiday in the stunning French Alps village of Morzine.

Imagine… waking up on Christmas morning and opening the curtains to look out upon your very own and very real, winter wonderland.

Morzine takes Christmas very seriously, with its beautifully decorated streets, musical events, children’s entertainment & fireworks. It makes a memorable holiday that is celebrated all week long for the whole family, skiers & non skiers alike. Father Christmas arrives on Christmas eve taking kids of all ages to the bottom of the Pleney to admire the torchlight descent and fireworks display after a parade from the local hockey team, the Morzine-Avoriaz Penguins.

It is a fantastic way to spend the festive season with family and friends or as a couple.

Morzine is part of the massive Portes du Soleil ski area where you’ll be able to ski 14 resorts across France and Switzerland ensure something for every level of skier. The snowsure conditions offer amazing alpine scenery and some of the best skiing in Europe.

There are many activities to partake in when it comes to spending this holiday in a ski resort keeping you as busy or relaxed as you desire – and you don’t even have to be a skier! There is also paragliding, snow shoeing, snowboarding, winter hiking, ice diving, snowmobiling, husky rides, horse and cart rides, ice skating and so much more plus not forgetting the fantastic restaurants offering everything from traditional French mountain dishes to modern gastro. Many of them will put on a special festive menu with champagne and all the Christmas trimmings, so book in advance if you want to treat yourself to a meal out.

Playing in the snow, building snow-men, roasted turkeys, a morning of skiing before the main meal, all the ingredients for the most unforgettably charming Christmas ever!
Christmas prices and availability for the 2009/2010 ski season are now available for the majority of properties available through www.mountainxtra.com  Don’t miss out on your white Christmas send us an e-mail with your requirements now to: info@mountainxtra.com

There’s More to Snow Than Skiing: Alternative Activities for Winter Holidays

5 07 2009

When most people think of a winter holiday they instantly think of skiing. As the world’s oldest, and most popular winter sport, thousands of people head to the mountains of Europe, North America, and some even more exotic locations every year to enjoy the delights of zooming down a snow covered mountain on a pair of planks. But what about those who want to enjoy a winter holiday without risking life and limb?

actsnowshoes1Well, there is a growing number of people who are heading out to ski resorts, yet who have no intention whatsoever of downhill skiing. Those who want to enjoy the great outdoors without the danger of snapping their bones, should try snowshoeing. Here, a special shoe is attached to your boots which allow you to walk easily over deep snow without sinking. Armed with a pair of poles you can wander along winter paths and enjoy the beautiful frosty scenery. Snow shoeing is ideal for young and old, as you can go at your own pace making it a perfect family activity.

activitieshuskies1Animal lovers might prefer to indulge in a less strenuous activity by taking a ride on a husky dog sled. Trips can be booked for a few hours, a full day, or even multi-day expeditions. After learning how to handle the sled and picking up a few of the basic dog commands, you’ll be able to set off through the snow after shouting “Mush! Mush!” at your pack of Husky hounds.

If you’re staying in a resort, then find out if there will be a Christmas market running. Throughout the festive period many places in Europe host Christmas Markets, offering visitors the chance to shop for local specialities, drink a glass of warming mulled wine ‘Vin Chaud’, buy locally made crafts, watch live music, see impressive lighting displays, and listen to carol signers.

activitiessnowmobile1Adrenaline junkies who want a bit more power between their legs can get their throttle fix by going snowmobiling. Most ski resort areas have a snowmobile circuit which can range from a simple loop taking a couple of minutes, to backcountry expeditions which can last all day. Snowmobiles are very easy to operate, and anyone can pick up the basics within a few minutes. Instructors will always be on hand to help and guide you.

And finally, if you are brave enough to step up to the challenge, then why not give ice diving a go? Especially popular in Scandinavia and any resort that has a lake, all you need is to sign up with a guide and they will provide everything for you – including dry suit!

So remember, winter holidays are no longer just for skiers – anyone can head out to the mountains and enjoy the winter wonderland without having to worry about ending up in hospital!

Book your holiday in the Portes du Soleil for all the above holiday activities and MORE!

What’s On in Montriond this Summer

3 06 2009

Saturday 6th June :
Mountain clean-up – meet at La Licherette (Les Lindarets bowl) 9am for a morning of picking up rubbish.

Emile has identified the following zones to be tackled:
1. Lindaret bowl and the Goat Village
2. Under the Lechere chair, Les Brocheaux, return by the piste
3. Ardent car park
4. The lake
5. 3 strong men needed (!!) to remove items illegally dumped under the
pare-avalanche before the lake.

There is thankfully a lot less rubbish than last year but all help will be very much appreciated and there will be lunch at 12.30 at the lake on the grass between the Domaine du Baron and Hotel des Sapins.
If there is a group of people who would like to meet at the lake (to save driving to Lindarets) then Emile can arrange a meeting point there at either 8.45 or 9.30 – he’ll need details before Friday to organise this.
You can email him (in French!) on brehier.emile@neuf.fr or call him on 06 84 62 75 30.  I’ll be going too this year (06 31 30 67 89).  It would also be good to have an idea of numbers to cater for. Bring warm clothes (hopefully it will be warmer than last year!).

Tuesday 14th Julyboules
Boules competition (near the football pitch).  A bigger Brit turnout than last year is needed!  If there is enough interest and good weather it could be a good event to have a BBQ after.  Everyone gets a prize!

Wednesday 22nd – Saturday 25th July:
Lind’Art festival at the lake : classical music

Wednesday 5th August : to be confirmed

Lake Montriond Fireworks Night

27 05 2009

Fire display MontriondEvery second Saturday of August Lake Montriond hosts a festival of food, music and fireworks.

Year after year this event is attended by hundreds of people arriving early for a picnic, BBQ, swimming, canoeing and drinks .

There are many food, drink and crafts stalls including one for kids of all ages to make their own wooden carvings. There are also bands that usually perform on 2 different stages from 4pm onwards.

parapenteBetween the bands peforming and the fireworks, the local parapenting schools put on a display of aerial acrobatics and stunts of all sorts – including freefalling before opening their reserve shoot and another decending with a blowup canoe to land in the lake.

Once the sun has set around 10pm glowing candles are spread across the lake. The main event is ready to begin! Lasting approximately 30 minutes, the display is a mixture of a story being told (in French), Fireworks and a light show. It is without a doubt an event not to be missed!!

light showThe main road to the lake is closed between the main event hours meaning either you get up there early to find a car park, walk up the road, hitch a ride or get the taxi that picks you up from the bottom of the Montriond bendy road to drop you off at the Lake for about EUR3pp.

The dates of this event is weather dependant!!!
