Review
“A very good guide, certainly well worth the money if you’re planning an unguided trip to the area and you’re not familiar with it. It’ll point you in the right direction for some exploring, too”. Mike Davies, Editor, Bikemagic.

UCI Mountain Bike World Cup: French celebration in Maribor
s1.06.2009
Sabrina Jonnier (Maxxis-Rocky Mountain) increased her lead in the women’s downhill standings with a fourth consecutive victory in the UCI Nissan Mountain Bike World Cup presented by Shimano. It was France’s day, as Jonnier was the first of four French riders on the podium.
Meanwhile, three times World Champion Fabien Barel (Subaru) announced his return from a knee injury by becoming the first non-Sanata Cruz Syndicate rider of the year to win a World Cup race. Greg Minnaar (Santa Cruz Syndicate) took over the World Cup lead from his team mate Steve Peat after the Englishman flatted on his run.
Floriane Pugin sets the pace
Although rain played havoc with the qualifying rounds the previous day, the finals of the downhill competition on Sunday were run in sunny conditions.
The tenth rider down in the final, Floriane Pugin (Iron Horse-Kenda-Playbiker) set the first fast time of the day for the final, more than 20 seconds ahead of the previous best time of Fionn Griffiths (Norco World Team). Pugin’s time was so fast that only two riders would beat her – Jonnier and Emmeline Ragot (Suspension Center).
Tracy Moseley (Trek World Racing), the winner of round one, was well back after crashing near the top of her run and Myriam Nicole, of France, came within 12 seconds of Pugin. But it took Jonnier to finally displace her young French rival, and she did it with the first sub-3min 40 ride, at 3mins 39’59. There was only one rider left by this time – former Juniors World Champion Ragot. She came through the first intermediate timer two-hundredths of a second ahead of Jonnier. However, Ragot lost four-tenths of a second in the lower portion of the run, to finish 0.31 seconds down on Jonnier. Celine Gros (Morzine-Avoriaz 74) took fourth, while Mio Suemasa of Japan took the final podium spot, breaking the French stranglehold.

Maribor, Slovenia, once again hosts the UCI World Cup this year, this time with a double event: 4X and downhill. Maribor returned to the Nissan UCI World Cup calendar in 2007, hosting the season’s final triple event. It went on to be voted second best downhill and 4X World Cup organizer of the season.
Maribor is a lively city with a population of more than 100,000 – that figure doubles when the surrounding area is taken into account. The advantage of this World Cup venue is the mixture of cosmopolitan life and open air facilities. Accommodation varies from ski chalets on the mountain to downtown hotels. After training on the mountain bike course, teams have the opportunity to hit some city shopping, restaurants and cafés.
Mountain biking has a long tradition in Maribor. The first cross-country races were already held on Pohorje in the early 90’s, but the sport really boomed after the first World Cup was organized here in 1999. Since then, Maribor has become one of the most visited events in the MTB World Cup series. Passionate bike fans flow in from all over the country as well as from neighboring Austria, Italy, Croatia and Hungary. Spectator numbers often exceed 11’000 per day, especially for the most popular attraction – the downhill race day.
